Surata brings to his teaching 50 years’ experience of both yoga and Buddhism. His teaching combines a depth of experience with humour and playfulness which he brings to his classes. His particular mindful and gentle style of yoga is influenced by the teaching of Vanda Scaravelli, as he writes:

“Experimenting with our body from stillness in meditation, slowly at first, so as to catch the quality of our own resting, breathing and subtle moving, we will sense for habitual patterns and look for appropriate alternatives. If we can allow the breath to lead and carry us into movement, perhaps we can free and awaken the spine and thence our hearts and minds.”

There will be two sessions of yoga a day alongside meditation, Buddhist devotional practice, ritual and discussion.

A slow, methodical approach to yoga inspired by the teachings of Vanda Scaravelli

Emphasising body awareness and deep sense of connection to the ground. Practice often begins with semi-supine position (laying on your back with knees up and feet down) followed by twists and movements to open up and generate movement of the spine in all directions. Positions often build upon the previous movements and likely include working on hands and knees, standing postures, possibly with some simple inversions e.g feet in the air/up the wall.

Clarity and precision are emphasised. Presented with warmth, sense of humour and depth. Previous knowledge of Triratna meditation and Buddhism is required as meditations may be unguided and self-led in silence.

A few things people said about previous retreats

“Thank you, Rivendell for a wonderful weekend of yoga and meditation with Surata and Sarah!
Everything about the weekend was perfect – from the warm greetings as we arrived to the heartfelt ‘au revoir’ as we left!
The yoga was delightful and delivered with great attention to detail. Somehow both challenging and yet deeply relaxing.
Each day started with a meditation led by Surata followed by yoga and then a welcome brunch cooked by our fabulous chef Patrick!
In fact all the food was delicious and beautifully prepared.
I’ve rarely had such a rewarding experience with people I’d only recently met and feel that I’ve made some deep and strong connections.
Such a gift. Thank you.”
